Bee Propolis Fights Dental Plaque
Bee propolis helps prevent the formation of dental plaque, according to new research. This effect seems to be due to its ability to inhibit the activity of certain enzymes, which synthesize glucans from sucrose.
Researchers analyzed propolis extracts, from samples obtained from 2 different regions in Brazil and analyzed the activity of enzymes exposed to the extracts.
The propolis effectively inhibited the activity of the enzymes from 45% to 95% at concentrations between 0.75 and 3.0 mg of propolis/ml.
The study's authors note that propolis has been used for thousands of years in folk medicine. They also note that the active compound in propolis responsible for this anti-plaque effect, is unknown and attempts should be made to identify it.
