Traditionally consumed among fishing communities, Squalene has long been used in Sweden, Norway, Japan and China to enhance and improve overall health.  It is often used in cosmetic products because its antioxidant components are believed to accumulate in the skin, reducing free radical damage and improving the complexion.

Squalene is found throughout nature in plant and animal sources and is a major component of human skin surface lipids (oils).  We ingest Squalene through products like olive oil, palm oil, rice bran and wheat germ, however, the largest concentration of Squalene is found in the liver of deep sea sharks.

Squalene may be beneficial as antioxidant and beauty supplement, but its most unique feature is the presence of alkyglycerols - chemical compounds found in human bone marrow and breast milk, which may help regenerate the immune system.  Regenerating the immune system is more than just stimulating it to action; the regenerative action means ongoing support to enhance the overall strength of the immune system long term.

The activity of alkyglycerols in the body has been studied for decades, and their action is often associated with increased production red and white blood cells; the white being the body’s main defence against disease and infection.

The dual benefit of increasing blood cells and supporting the immune system are perhaps the reasons that Squalene seems to be so useful for so many people around the world for maintaining all-over health and wellbeing.

Although Squalene is sourced all over the world, some of the richest sources for supplements can be found in a particular species of shark – the Southern Dogfish shark - which has been shown to yield the highest natural concentration of Squalene and Alkyglycerides.
